What is the difference between total return and annualized return?
Total return is the overall percentage gain or loss from purchase to sale, including dividends. Annualized return is the equivalent yearly rate that would produce that total return over the holding period. A 50% total return over 5 years equals about 8.4% annualized. Annualized returns allow fair comparison between investments held for different time periods.
