Which checksum algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 is the current standard for file integrity verification. MD5 and SHA-1 are considered cryptographically broken and should not be relied upon for security-sensitive verification, though they are still widely published for legacy compatibility. If you have a choice, always use SHA-256 or SHA-512.
